Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry 2 Question 17
17. The oxidation number of sulphur in $\mathrm{S}{8}, \mathrm{~S}{2} \mathrm{~F}{2}, \mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{~S}$ respectively, are
(1999)
(a) $0,+1$ and -2
(b) $+2,+1$ and -2
(c) $0,+1$ and +2
(d) $-2,+1$ and -2
Show Answer
Solution:
- In $\mathrm{S}_{8}$, oxidation number of $\mathrm{S}$ is 0 , elemental state.
In $\mathrm{S}{2} \mathrm{~F}{2}, \mathrm{~F}$ is in -1 oxidation state, hence $\mathrm{S}$ is in +1 oxidation state.
In $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{~S}, \mathrm{H}$ is in +1 oxidation state, hence $\mathrm{S}$ is in -2 oxidation state.
