(b) $\mathrm{Mg}\left(\mathrm{NO}{3}\right){2}$ and $\mathrm{Mg}{3} \mathrm{~N}{2}$
(c) $\mathrm{MgO}$ only
(d) $\mathrm{MgO}$ and $\mathrm{Mg}\left(\mathrm{NO}{3}\right){2}$
Show Answer
Answer:
Correct Answer: 6. (d)
Solution:
- Magnesium powder burns in air to give $\mathrm{MgO}$ and $\mathrm{Mg}{3} \mathrm{~N}{2} \cdot \mathrm{MgO}$ does not combine with excess oxygen to give any superoxide. $\mathrm{Mg}$ reacts with nitrogen to form magnesium nitride $\left(\mathrm{Mg}{3} \mathrm{~N}{2}\right)$.
$$ \begin{gathered} \mathrm{Mg}+\mathrm{O}{2} \longrightarrow \mathrm{MgO} \ 3 \mathrm{Mg}+\mathrm{N}{2} \longrightarrow \mathrm{Mg}{3} \mathrm{~N}{2} \end{gathered} $$
