sblock Elements 1 Question 39
57. Give reasons in one or two sentences for the following: " $\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}{2}$ is a better oxidising agent than $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$."
(1986, 1M)
Show Answer
Solution:
- In $\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}{2}$, the peroxide ion $\left(\mathrm{O}{2}^{2-}\right)$ is unstable, has tendency to pass into stable oxide state $\left(\mathrm{O}^{2-}\right)$. Hence, $\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}{2}$ is a good oxidising agent while $\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}$ is stable.
