pBlock ElementsII 2 Question 6

6. Which of the following reactions is an example of a redox reaction?

(2017 Main)

(a) $\mathrm{XeF}{4}+\mathrm{O}{2} \mathrm{~F}{2} \longrightarrow \mathrm{XeF}{6}+\mathrm{O}_{2}$

(b) $\mathrm{XeF}{2}+\mathrm{PF}{5} \longrightarrow[\mathrm{XeF}]^{+} \mathrm{PF}_{6}^{-}$

(c) $\mathrm{XeF}{6}+\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O} \longrightarrow \mathrm{XeOF}_{4}+2 \mathrm{HF}$

(d) $\mathrm{XeF}{6}+2 \mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O} \longrightarrow \mathrm{XeO}{2} \mathrm{~F}{2}+4 \mathrm{HF}$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. The reaction in which oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously are termed as redox reaction.

$$ \stackrel{+4}{\mathrm{XeF}} \mathrm{F}{4}+\stackrel{+1}{\mathrm{O}} 2\left(\mathrm{~F}{2}\right) \longrightarrow \stackrel{+6}{\mathrm{X}} \mathrm{eF}{6}+\stackrel{0}{\mathrm{O}} 2{2} $$

Since, $\mathrm{Xe}$ undergoes oxidation while $\mathrm{O}$ undergoes reduction. So, it is an example of redox reaction.
