pBlock ElementsII 1 Question 19
19. The reaction of $\mathrm{P}{4}$ with $X$ leads selectively to $\mathrm{P}{4} \mathrm{O}{6}$. The $X$, is (a) dry $\mathrm{O}{2}$
(2009)
(b) a mixture of $\mathrm{O}{2}$ and $\mathrm{N}{2}$
(c) moist $\mathrm{O}_{2}$
(d) $\mathrm{O}_{2}$ in the presence of aqueous $\mathrm{NaOH}$
Show Answer
Solution:
- In limited supply of oxygen, phosphorus is oxidised to its lower oxide $\mathrm{P}{4} \mathrm{O}{6}$ while excess of oxygen gives $\mathrm{P}{4} \mathrm{O}{10}$. A mixture of $\mathrm{O}{2}$ and $\mathrm{N}{2}$ is used for controlled oxidation of phosphorus into $\mathrm{P}{4} \mathrm{O}{6}$.
