pBlock ElementsII 1 Question 100
96. Explain the following
$(1989,2 M)$
(i) $\mathrm{H}{3} \mathrm{PO}{3}$ is a dibasic acid.
(ii) Phosphine has lower boiling point than ammonia.
Show Answer
Solution:
- (i) In $\mathrm{H}{3} \mathrm{PO}{3}$, there is only two replaceable $\mathrm{H}$, hence dibasic
(ii) $\mathrm{NH}{3}$ molecules are associated by intermolecular $\mathrm{H}-$ bonds. 97. (i) $\underset{\begin{array}{c}\text { hypophosphorus } \ \text { acid }\end{array}}{2 \mathrm{H}{3} \mathrm{PO}{2}} \stackrel{\Delta}{\longrightarrow} \mathrm{PH}{3}+\mathrm{H}{3} \mathrm{PO}{4}$ (Disproportionation)
(ii) $\mathrm{NaClO}{3}+\mathrm{SO}{2} \xrightarrow{10 \mathrm{H}^{+}} \mathrm{NaCl}+\mathrm{S}+5 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$
