p-Block Elements-I 2 Question 12
12. Identify the correct order of acidic strength of $\mathrm{CO}{2}, \mathrm{CuO}, \mathrm{CaO}, \mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}$.
(a) $\mathrm{CaO}<\mathrm{CuO}<\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}<\mathrm{CO}{2}$
(b) $\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}<\mathrm{CuO}<\mathrm{CaO}<\mathrm{CO}{2}$
(c) $\mathrm{CaO}<\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}<\mathrm{CuO}<\mathrm{CO}{2}$
(d) $\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}<\mathrm{CO}{2}<\mathrm{CaO}<\mathrm{CuO}$
$(2002,3 \mathrm{M})$
Show Answer
Solution:
- $\mathrm{CO}{2}$ is acidic oxide, $\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}$ is neutral, $\mathrm{CaO}$ is strongly basic and $\mathrm{CuO}$ is weakly basic. Therefore, order of acid strength is :
$$ \mathrm{CaO}<\mathrm{CuO}<\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}<\mathrm{CO}{2} $$
