Organic Chemistry Basics 2 Question 31
31.
Arrange in order of increasing acidic strength
$(2004,1 \mathrm{M})$
(a) $X>Z>Y$
(b) $Z
(c) $X>Y>Z$
(d) $Z>X>Y$
Show Answer
Solution:
- Carboxylic acid is stronger acid than ammonium ion, hence $-\mathrm{COOH}(X)$ is most acidic. $Z\left(\stackrel{+}{\mathrm{N}} \mathrm{H}{3}\right)$ is more acidic than $Y\left(\stackrel{+}{\mathrm{N}} \mathrm{H}{3}\right)$ due to $-I$ effect of $-\mathrm{COOH}$ on $Z$. Hence, overall acid strength order is
$$ X>Z>Y $$
