Hydrocarbons 2 Question 79
84. Give one characteristic test which would distinguish $\mathrm{CH}{4}$ from $\mathrm{C}{2} \mathrm{H}_{2}$.
$(1979,1 \mathrm{M})$
Show Answer
Solution:
- Acetylene can be distinguished from methane using Tollen’s reagent :
$$ \mathrm{C}{2} \mathrm{H}{2}+\mathrm{AgNO}{3} \xrightarrow{\mathrm{NH}{3}(a q)} \mathrm{H} \underset{\text { White ppt. }}{\mathrm{C} \equiv \mathrm{CAg} \downarrow} $$
