Electrochemistry 2 Question 51
50. Give reasons in one or two sentences.
“Anhydrous $\mathrm{HCl}$ is a bad conductor of electricity but aqueous $\mathrm{HCl}$ is a good conductor.”
$(1985,1 \mathrm{M})$
Show Answer
Solution:
- For conductivity, the charge carriers are required. In anhydrous state, $\mathrm{HCl}$ is not ionised and no charge carrier ions are available, hence bad conductor. However, in aqueous solution, $\mathrm{HCl}$ is fully ionised producing $\mathrm{H}^{+}$and $\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$ and conducts electricity.
