Electrochemistry 2 Question 23
22. For the electrochemical cell, $\left(M \mid M^{+}\right) |\left(X^{-} \mid X\right)$, $E^{\circ}\left(M^{+} / M\right)=0.44 \mathrm{~V}$ and $E^{\circ}\left(X / X^{-}\right)=0.33 \mathrm{~V}$.
From this data one can deduce that
$(2000,1 \mathrm{M})$
(a) $M+X \longrightarrow M^{+}+X^{-}$is the spontaneous reaction
(b) $M^{+}+X^{-} \longrightarrow M+X$ is the spontaneous reaction
(c) $E_{\text {cell }}=0.77 \mathrm{~V}$
(d) $E_{\text {cell }}=-0.77 \mathrm{~V}$
Show Answer
Solution:
- The spontaneous cell reaction is
$$ X^{-}+M^{+} \longrightarrow M+X ; E^{\circ}=0.11 \mathrm{~V} $$
