Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium 2 Question 38
38. A buffer solution can be prepared from a mixture of
(a) sodium acetate and acetic acid in water
$(1999,3 \mathrm{M})$
(b) sodium acetate and $\mathrm{HCl}$ in water
(c) ammonia and ammonium chloride in water
(d) ammonia and sodium hydroxide in water
(a) $1.0 \times 10^{-4}$
(d) $1.0 \times 10^{14}$
(c) $1.0 \times 10^{10}$
(d) $1.0 \times 10^{14}$
Show Answer
Solution:
- $\mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COOH}+\mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COONa}=$ Buffer solution
$\mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COONa}+\mathrm{HCl} \longrightarrow \mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COOH}+\mathrm{NaCl}$
If $\mathrm{HCl}$ is taken in limited quantity, final solution will have both $\mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COOH}$ and $\mathrm{CH}{3} \mathrm{COONa}$ needed for buffer solution.
Ammonia and ammonium chloride forms basic buffer.
