Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium 2 Question 33
33. Of the given anions, the strongest base is
(1981, 1M)
(a) $\mathrm{ClO}^{-}$
(b) $\mathrm{ClO}_{2}^{-}$
(c) $\mathrm{ClO}_{3}^{-}$
(d) $\mathrm{ClO}_{4}^{-}$
Show Answer
Solution:
- The order of acidic strength of conjugate acids is
$$ \mathrm{HOCl}<\mathrm{HClO}{2}<\mathrm{HClO}{3}<\mathrm{HClO}_{4} $$
Reverse is the order of basic strength of their conjugate base, i.e. $\mathrm{ClO}^{-}$is the strongest base.
