Transport in Plants Question 6

6. Which of the following criteria does not pertain to facilitated transport?

[NEET 2013]

(a) High selectivity

(b) Transport saturation

(c) Uphill transport

(d) Requirement of special membrane proteins

Show Answer

Answer : c

Hints & Solutions

(c) Substances that have a hydrophilic moiety, find it difficult to pass through the membrane, their movement has to be facilitated by the membrane protein without expenditure of ATP energy. Facilitated diffusion cannot cause net transport of molecules from a low to a high concentration or uphill transport. Transport rate reaches a maximum when all of the protein transporters are being used (saturation). Facilitated diffusion is very specific.
