Respiration in Plants Question 38
38. Chemiosmotic theory of ATP synthesis in the chloroplasts and mitochondria is based on:
[2005]
(a) membrane potential
(b) accumulation of $Na$ ions
(c) accumulation of $K$ ions
(d) proton gradient
Show Answer
Answer : d
Hints & Solutions
(d) Proton gradient is the product of the electron transport chain. Increased proton concentration is produced in the outer chamber of outer surface of inner mitochondrial membrane by the pushing of protons with the help of energy liberated by passage of electrons from one carrier to another. Photosynthesis is carried out by a specialised organelle called chloroplast. Chloroplasts carry out their energy interconversions by means of proton gradients in much the same way that mitochondria do.
