Amnion is a membrane that encloses the embryo of reptiles, birds and mammals within the amniotic cavity. This cavity is filled with amniotic fluid, in which the embryo is protected from dessication and external pressure. Amniocentesis is a prenatal procedure which is recommended by doctor during pregnancy. The test checks for fetal abnormalities (birth defects) such as Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis or spina bifida. This test is performed between 16 and 20 weeks of the pregnancy.
