Cell Cycle and Cell Division Question 17
17. Anaphase Promoting Complex (APC) is a protein degradation machinery necessary for proper mitosis of animal cells. If APC is defective in a human cell, which of the following is expected to occur?
[2017]
(a) Chromosomes will be fragmented
(b) Chromosomes will not segregate
(c) Recombination of chromosome arms will occur
(d) Chromosomes will not condense
Show Answer
Answer : b
Hints & Solutions
(b) During anaphase, Anaphase Promoting Complex (APC) is a protein necessary for separation of daughter chromosomes. A defective APC will cause the chromosomes fail to segregate during anaphase. The APC gene provides instructions for making the APC protein, which plays a critical role in several cellular processes. The APC protein acts as a tumor suppressor, which means that it keeps cells from growing and dividing too fast or in an uncontrolled way. People with mutations in the APC gene have familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or attenuated FAP (AFAP). You have an increased chance to develop multiple gastrointestinal polyps, colorectal cancer, and possibly other cancers. There are risk management options to detect cancer early or lower the risk to develop cancer.
