Animal Kingdom Question 14

14. In case of poriferans, the spongocoel is lined with flagellated cells called:

(a) oscula

(b) choanocytes

(c) mesenchymal cells

(d) ostia

Show Answer

Answer : b

Hints & Solutions

(b) In poriferans (sponges) choanocytes (collar cells) form lining of spongocoel. Flagella present in collar cells provide circulation to water in water canal system. By cooperatively moving their flagella, choanocytes generate a flow of water through the sponges’ pores, into the spongocoel, and out through the osculum.
