Wave Optics Question 10

Question 10 - 2024 (30 Jan Shift 2)

A beam of unpolarised light of intensity $I_{0}$ is passed through a polaroid $A$ and then through another polaroid $B$ which is oriented so that its principal plane makes an angle of $45^{\circ}$ relative to that of $\mathrm{A}$. The intensity of emergent light is :

(1) $\mathrm{I}_{0} / 4$

(2) $\mathrm{I}_{0}$

(3) $I_{0} / 2$

(4) $I_{0} / 8$

Show Answer

Answer: (1)

Solution:

Intensity of emergent light

$=\frac{\mathrm{I}{0}}{2} \cos ^{2} 45^{\circ}=\frac{\mathrm{I}{0}}{4}$
