A light string passing over a smooth light fixed pulley connects two blocks of masses $m_{1}$ and $m_{2}$. If the acceleration of the system is $g / 8$, then the ratio of masses is

(1) $\frac{9}{7}$

(2) $\frac{8}{1}$

(3) $\frac{4}{3}$

(4) $\frac{5}{3}$

Solution:

$a=\frac{\left(m_{1}-m_{2}\right) g}{\left(m_{1}+m_{2}\right)}=\frac{g}{8}$

$8 \mathrm{~m}{1}-8 \mathrm{~m}{2}=\mathrm{m}{1}+\mathrm{m}{2}$

$7 \mathrm{~m}{1}=9 \mathrm{~m}{2}$

$\frac{\mathrm{m}{1}}{\mathrm{~m}{2}}=\frac{9}{7}$
