Redox Reactions Question 6

Question 6 - 2024 (29 Jan Shift 1)

Chlorine undergoes disproportionation in alkaline medium as shown below :

$\mathrm{aCl}{2}(\mathrm{~g})+\mathrm{bOH}^{-}(\mathrm{aq}) \rightarrow \mathrm{cClO}^{-}(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{dCl}^{-}(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{e}{2} \mathrm{O}(l)$

The values of $a, b, c$ and $d$ in a balanced redox reaction are respectively:

(1) 1, 2, 1 and 1

(2) 2, 2, 1 and 3

(3) 3, 4, 4 and 2

(4) 2, 4, 1 and 3

Show Answer

Answer (1)

Solution

$\Rightarrow \mathrm{Cl}{2}+2 \overline{\mathrm{O}} \mathrm{H} \longrightarrow \mathrm{Cl}^{-}+\mathrm{ClO}^{-}+\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}$
