Redox Reactions Question 10

Question 10 - 2024 (31 Jan Shift 2)

Given below are two statements :

Statement I: $\mathrm{S}_{8}$ solid undergoes

disproportionation reaction under alkaline

conditions to form $\mathrm{S}^{2-}$ and $\mathrm{S}{2} \mathrm{O}{3}{ }^{2-}$

Statement II: $\mathrm{ClO}_{4}^{-}$can undergo

disproportionation reaction under acidic condition.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

(1) Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect.

(2) Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct

(3) Both statement I and statement II are incorrect

(4) Both statement I and statement II are correct

Show Answer

Answer (1)

Solution

$\mathrm{S}{1}: \mathrm{S}{8}+12 \mathrm{OH}^{\ominus} \rightarrow 4 \mathrm{~S}^{2-}+2 \mathrm{~S}{2} \mathrm{O}{3}^{2-}+6 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$

$\mathrm{S}{2}: \mathrm{ClO}{4}^{\ominus}$ cannot undergo disproportionation reaction as chlorine is present in it’s highest oxidation state.
