Question 3 - 2024 (29 Jan Shift 2)

On passing a gas, ’ $X$ ‘, through Nessler’s reagent, a brown precipitate is obtained. The gas ’ $\mathrm{X}$ ’ is

(1) $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{~S}$

(2) $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$

(3) $\mathrm{NH}_{3}$

(4) $\mathrm{Cl}_{2}$

Show Answer

Answer (3)

Solution

Nessler’s Reagent Reaction :

$\underset{\text{Nessler Reagent}}{2 \mathrm{~K}{2} \mathrm{HgI}{4}}+\mathrm{NH}{3}+3 \mathrm{KOH} \rightarrow \underset{\substack{\text{odine of Million’s base}\ \text{Brown precipate}}}{\mathrm{HgO} . \mathrm{Hg}\left(\mathrm{NH}{2}\right) \mathrm{I}}+7 \mathrm{KI}+2 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$
