Solid State Question 1
Question 1 - 25 January - Shift 1
A cubic solid is made up of two elements $X$ and $Y$. Atoms of $X$ are present on every alternate corner and one at the center of cube. $Y$ is at $\frac{1^{\text{rd }}}{}$ of the total faces. The empirical formula of the compound is
(1) $X_2 Y _{1.5}$
(2) $X _{2.5} Y$
(3) $X Y _{2.5}$
(4) $X _{1.5} Y_2$
Show Answer
Answer: (2)
Solution:
$X _{4 \times \frac{1}{8}+1 \times 1} Y _{6 \times \frac{1}{3} \times \frac{1}{2}}$
$\Rightarrow \quad X _{\frac{1}{2}+1} Y_1$
$\Rightarrow \quad X _{\frac{2}{3}}^{\text{mathon }} Y_1$
$\Rightarrow \quad X _{1.5} \quad Y_1$
$\Rightarrow X_3 \quad Y_2$
