Question: Which of the following statements is not true about partition chromatography? [JEE Online 08-04-2017]
Options:
A) Stationary phase is a finely divided solid adsorbent
B) Separation depends upon equilibration of solute between a mobile and a stationary phase
C) Paper chromatography is an example of partition chromatography
D) Mobile phase can be a gas
Show Answer
Answer:
Correct Answer: A
Solution:
The statement (A) is not true about partition chromatography. Stationary phase may/may not be finely divided solid adsorbent. In paper chromatography, paper is used as stationary phase and is not finely divided.
The separation of the components from the sample mixture is carried out by the process of partition of the components between 2 phases. Both phases are in liquid form. In this process, the immiscible solid surface coated with the liquid surface on the stationary phase is in the mobile phase. The liquid surface is immobilized by a stationary phase which results in making its a stationary phase.
