CLAT 2025 Registration Opens July 15: Key Details Revealed

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has announced the release of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2025 notification, marking the beginning of the registration process for the prestigious law entrance exam. Aspiring law students can now register online from July 15, 2024, and submit their applications by October 15, 2024. The CLAT 2025 exam is scheduled to take place on December 1, 2024.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the under-graduate programme (five-year integrated law degree), candidates must have passed their Class 12 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% marks or an equivalent grade. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Person with Disabilities (PwD) candidates, the minimum marks required is 40%. Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination in March or April 2025 are also eligible to apply.

For the post-graduate programme (one-year LLM degree), candidates must have an LLB degree or an equivalent qualification with a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent grade for general candidates. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the minimum marks required is 45%. Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination in April or May 2025 are also eligible to apply.

Application Fees

The application fee for CLAT 2025 varies based on the category of the candidate. For general, OBC, and EWS candidates, the fee is Rs. 4,000, which includes the cost of question papers. For SC, ST, PWD, and BPL candidates, the fee is Rs. 3,500, which also includes the cost of question papers. The application fee can be paid online.

Exam Pattern

The CLAT 2025 exam is a pen-and-paper based offline test conducted for a duration of two hours (2:00 PM to 4:00 PM). The exam tests candidates’ knowledge and skills in various legal and non-legal areas, with a focus on the following sections:

  • Legal Reasoning: This section assesses the candidate’s comprehension of legal principles, their ability to analyze legal situations, and apply legal knowledge to solve problems.
  • Logical Reasoning: This section tests the candidate’s analytical abilities, reasoning skills, and ability to identify patterns and arguments.
  • Quantitative Techniques: This section assesses the candidate’s mathematical ability, data interpretation skills, and ability to analyze numerical data.
  • Current Affairs including General Knowledge: This section tests the candidate’s awareness of current events, national and international issues, social, political, economic, and scientific developments.
  • Legal Aptitude: This section assesses the candidate’s inherent understanding of legal concepts, legal terminology, and basic principles of jurisprudence.
  • English Language: This section tests the candidate’s proficiency in English language, including grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills.

Selection Process

The selection process for CLAT 2025 is a multi-stage process:

  • Stage 1: Written Exam - Candidates who qualify in the written exam will be shortlisted for the next stage.
  • Stage 2: Counselling - Shortlisted candidates will participate in a counselling process where they will be required to choose their preferred National Law Universities (NLUs) based on their rank and seat availability.
  • Stage 3: Document Verification - During counselling, candidates must provide original documents for verification to confirm their eligibility.
