Centre Opposes Scrapping NEET, Cites Risks to Students: Affidavit to Supreme Court
The Centre has filed an affidavit with the Supreme Court, arguing against the cancellation of the NEET-UG exam. The government believes that scrapping the exam would harm many honest students who took it fairly. They emphasized that the interests of these students should not be compromised.
The affidavit stated, “Without evidence of a widespread breach of confidentiality in a nationwide exam, it would not be reasonable to cancel the entire examination.”
The NEET-UG 2024 exam, organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for undergraduate medical programs, has faced controversy due to reports of question paper leaks in some states and the awarding of grace marks to 1,500 students. These issues led to widespread protests. The grace marks were later revoked, and a re-test was conducted.
In its affidavit, the Centre mentioned that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is thoroughly investigating the alleged irregularities. The government assured that it is dedicated to conducting all exams fairly and transparently.
The government also highlighted that the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act is already in place, which includes strict punishments for cheating in exams.
“The government is committed to maintaining the integrity of examinations and protecting students’ interests,” the affidavit stated.
A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is set to hear multiple petitions requesting a re-test on July 8.
The government also noted that the Ministry of Education has formed a committee of experts to suggest effective measures for conducting transparent, smooth, and fair exams by the National Testing Agency. This committee is headed by former ISRO chairperson Dr. K Radhakrishnan.
“The committee will provide recommendations on reforms in the examination process, improvements in data security protocols, and the structure and functioning of the National Testing Agency,” the Centre said.
