North Korea Successfully Tests Multiple-Warhead Missile

North Korea announced on Thursday that it had successfully tested a missile capable of carrying multiple warheads, according to state media. At the same time, numerous balloons filled with trash, sent from North Korea, landed in South Korea.

The relationship between North and South Korea is currently very strained. North Korea has been increasing its weapons tests and sending trash-filled balloons to the South. They claim this is in response to similar actions by South Korean activists.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), which is run by the state, reported that North Korea had “successfully conducted the separation and guidance control test of individual mobile warheads.” These warheads were accurately directed to three different targets during the test on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

KCNA explained that the purpose of the test was to develop MIRV technology, which stands for multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle. This technology allows a single missile to carry and launch multiple warheads.

However, South Korea’s military observed that the missile tested on Wednesday seemed to be a hypersonic missile, but it exploded in mid-air. A South Korean military official noted that there was more smoke than usual, suggesting there might have been combustion problems.
