The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday criticized the poor treatment of Satnam Singh, an Indian worker who passed away in northern Italy. The ministry confirmed that his employer, who was supposed to ensure his medical care, has been arrested.
Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the MEA, emphasized the need for humane treatment of workers and assured that all possible support is being extended to Satnam Singh’s family.
“His employer, who was responsible for his medical care, has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. We strongly condemn such treatment and call for humane treatment of workers. We are providing all possible assistance to his family,” Jaiswal stated during a weekly briefing.
India has also brought this issue to the attention of Italy, urging for quick action against those accountable for his death.
Muktesh Pardeshi, the Secretary of the Consular Passport and Visa Division and Overseas Indian Affairs in the MEA, discussed the matter with Luigi Maria Vignali, the Director General for Migratory Policies and Italians Abroad at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Pardeshi added that the Indian Embassy in Italy is in touch with Satnam Singh’s family to offer consular support and arrange for the transportation of his body back to India.
“@SecretaryCPVOIA Muktesh Pardeshi expressed to @LuigiVignali, the Italian DG, our deep concern over the death of Satnam Singh and called for prompt action against those responsible. The Embassy is in contact with Satnam Singh’s family for consular help and transportation of his mortal remains @MEAIndia,” the Indian embassy in Italy posted on X on June 26.
Satnam Singh, an Indian national, died after being left on the street following an accident, according to the Flai CGIL trade union.
The accident, which resulted in the severing of his arm, occurred while he was working on a farm.
The Flai CGIL trade union reported that instead of receiving help from his employer, “Singh was dumped like a bag of rubbish near his home.”
Earlier last week, the Embassy stated that it is in contact with local authorities and is making efforts to reach out to the family and provide consular assistance.
