Historic Achievement: Indian Women’s Cricket Team Sets New World Record After 90 Years
On Saturday, the Indian women’s cricket team made history by recording the highest team total in women’s Test cricket. This remarkable feat was achieved on the second day of the one-off Test match against South Africa. India surpassed the previous record of 575/9 set by Australia in Perth this February. The new record was set at 603/6d when Richa Ghosh hit a four on the first ball of the 109th over, bowled by Annerie Dercksen.
A significant part of this achievement is credited to the Indian openers, Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. Shafali scored 205 runs, and Smriti added 149 runs, together forming a record-breaking opening partnership of 292 runs, the highest in women’s cricket history.
The team’s success was further supported by Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored 55 runs, and the unbeaten contributions from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh, both of whom have crossed their half-centuries.
On the first day of the match, India had already set a new record by finishing at 525 for four, the highest-ever single-day total in a Test match. This broke the previous record of 509 for nine, set by the Sri Lankan men’s team against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2002.
Since the inception of women’s Test cricket in 1934, this is the first time a team has reached a total of 575 runs in an innings.
