When we think of Mars, we usually picture a red, dusty, and cold desert-like planet. It’s a place that has been explored a lot and is known for its unique features. But recently, the European Space Agency (ESA) released some new photos that show Mars is more than just a red planet. These pictures reveal a “surprising rainbow” on its surface.
The ESA shared these images with the caption “Mars: More than just red,” showcasing the planet’s surface in stunning detail. The photos, taken by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, show layers of yellow clays (which have iron and magnesium), white and blue aluminum deposits, and dark eroded rocks. “Sure, Mars looks rusty from Earth, but space cameras reveal a surprising rainbow,” the ESA stated.
The space agency gave more information about this unexpected rainbow sighting on Mars. “Welcome to Mawrth Vallis. Once filled with liquid water, it is a treasure trove of minerals. It was even considered a landing site for our ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover, which is searching for signs of past life,” the ESA added.
The agency also touched on a question that has intrigued many: “Does Mars hold the secrets of ancient life?” The post has been widely shared on social media, getting over 7,000 likes and many comments from amazed users. One person said, “Why is it looking more and more like home, right?”
Another user exclaimed, “Whaaaat!! such a crazy detail,” while someone else added, “This is incredible…we’re in for some real surprises across the universe.” Some people even speculated that Mars might have “intelligence and civilized life with ancient origins.”

Mars is one of the most explored planets in our solar system, second only to Earth. According to the ESA, there were once high hopes that the planet’s seasonal color changes were signs of growing vegetation. If plants existed, it would mean other forms of life might be there too. However, scientists have not yet confirmed if there is life on Mars that could support humans.
Mars is located less than 60 million kilometers from Earth. Forty years of exploration have shown us a fascinating world with deep valleys, huge volcanoes, and ice-crystal clouds. While the Martian environment is harsh, it is still more welcoming than the scorching surface of Venus, according to the ESA.
