MK Stalin’s Letters to PM Modi and 8 Chief Ministers to Abolish NEET

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has once again called on the central government to exempt Tamil Nadu from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical college admissions. He also urged the government to eliminate the NEET system nationwide.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Stalin argued that professional course admissions should be based on 12th standard marks instead of a separate entrance exam, which he believes adds unnecessary stress on students.

Stalin highlighted that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a Bill to exempt the state from NEET and to base medical admissions on 12th standard marks. This Bill has been sent for Presidential assent, which is still pending.

He also reached out to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, seeking his support for Tamil Nadu’s demand to be exempted from NEET. Stalin pointed out that recent irregularities in the NEET exam have validated the state’s opposition to it. He mentioned that other states have also started expressing their concerns about the NEET selection process.

On Friday, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution urging the Union Government to approve the Bill for NEET exemption and to amend the National Medical Commission Act to eliminate the NEET system at the national level.

In addition, Stalin wrote separate letters to the Chief Ministers of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana, and West Bengal. He requested them to consider passing similar resolutions in their state assemblies to abolish NEET.

“Given the importance and seriousness of this issue, I urge you to consider passing a similar resolution in your state Legislative Assembly to request the Union Government to abolish NEET exams in the interest of our students,” Stalin wrote in his letter.

Stalin also informed Rahul Gandhi about the resolution passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. He expressed concern that recent irregularities in the NEET exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) have shattered the dreams of many hardworking medical aspirants. He added that the current system deprives rural poor youth of the opportunity to become medical graduates.

Stalin enclosed a copy of the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and requested Gandhi to voice this concern in Parliament. He also suggested that states in the INDIA alliance pass similar resolutions in their respective assemblies to support the youth of the nation.
