Two Suspected Dengue Deaths in Bengaluru; BBMP Chief Urges for Detailed Action Plan: Report

On Friday, June 28, two suspected dengue-related deaths were reported in Bengaluru, amid a growing number of cases in the city. One of the deaths happened within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) area, while the other occurred outside its jurisdiction, according to The Hindu. The BBMP Health Commissioner mentioned that these are currently suspected cases and will be confirmed after death audits scheduled for today, Saturday, June 29.

Health officials shared some initial information: an elderly person from the BBMP area died in a city hospital, and another senior citizen living outside the BBMP limits also passed away, both suspected to be due to dengue complications. These deaths are being closely examined, pending official audits by the health department.

Suralkar Vikas Kishor, the BBMP Health Commissioner, reiterated that these are suspected cases and will be confirmed after the death audits today. If confirmed, these would be the first dengue-related deaths in Bengaluru this year. This contrasts with five reported dengue deaths in other parts of Karnataka, including Hassan, Shivamogga, Dharwad, and Haveri, as reported by the publication.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru has seen 1,530 confirmed dengue cases from January 1 to June 28. BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath, who was recently diagnosed with dengue himself, has launched a “Dry Day” campaign. This campaign encourages residents to remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed. He stressed the importance of detailed action plans, house-to-house surveys, and awareness campaigns. These efforts include using autorickshaws with loudspeakers to spread the message in high-risk areas, according to the report.
