Nine Indian Track and Field Athletes Secure Spots for Paris 2024 Olympics Through Rankings
Nine Indian track and field athletes have secured their spots for the 2024 Paris Olympics, as confirmed by the final rankings list published by World Athletics after the qualification period ended on June 30, 2024.
Among these athletes, steeplechaser Parul Chaudhary stands out as the only Indian to qualify for two events. She earned her place in the women’s 5000m, in addition to her earlier qualification in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2023 World Championships by meeting the Olympic qualification mark.
In the men’s shot put, Asian Champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor has secured his spot, while Sarvesh Anil Kushare has qualified in the men’s high jump. Praveen Chitravel and Abdulla Aboobacker have both earned their places in the men’s triple jump. Annu Rani, an Asian Games gold medalist, has qualified in the women’s javelin throw.
Jyothi Yarraji will make history as the first Indian woman to compete in the 100m hurdles at the Olympics. National record holder Abha Khatua has also secured her place in the women’s shot put.
In men’s javelin throw, DP Manu has qualified as the third Indian athlete, following Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Kumar Jena, who secured their spots at the Asian Games last year. However, Manu’s absence from the recent Inter-State Athletics Championships due to alleged doping charges raises questions about his participation.
In the men’s long jump, Jeswin Aldrin is currently ranked 33rd, just one spot away from qualification. With Murali Sreeshankar pulling out, there is a strong possibility that Jeswin will secure his place for the Paris Olympics.
