India’s triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup marked a significant moment for the national team. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team clinched the trophy in the West Indies. This location holds historical significance as it was where Indian cricket faced one of its darkest moments with a humiliating group stage exit in the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Interestingly, Rahul Dravid was the head coach this time, and the final match of the tournament was his last game in charge. Back in 2007, Greg Chappell was the coach, and his controversial tenure ended after India’s defeat to Sri Lanka in their final game of that World Cup.
Reacting to India’s recent victory, Chappell sent a special message to Dravid, expressing his happiness at seeing Dravid lift the trophy. “Congratulations to India on winning the T20 World Cup. I am particularly pleased for Rahul for being part of the victory. It is a wonderful way for him to finish his time with the team,” Chappell told Mid-Day.
For those who may not know, Dravid became the captain of the Indian team shortly after Chappell took over as head coach in 2005, following Sourav Ganguly’s removal from the position. Dravid and Chappell worked together for nearly two years, during which India faced a group stage exit in the 2006 Champions Trophy held at home. However, they also achieved notable successes, such as winning a Test series in the West Indies for the first time in 35 years.
During their tenure, India set a world record for the most consecutive victories in ODI cricket by a team chasing, winning 17 games in a row.
